George R.R. Martin already made the ultimate pro-refugee argument in ‘Game of Thrones’

Jon Snow

“Game of Thrones” series writer George R.R. Martin recently posted on his LiveJournal in favor of letting in Syrian refugees to the United States.

“Donald Trump and thirty-one governors have it wrong, wrong, wrong,” Martin writes in his post, which now has nearly 300 comments. “The Syrian refugees are as much victims of ISIS as the dead in France.”

And while many of Martin’s commenters spoke positively about his views, some of his fans were less than thrilled with his statements.

“Surprised that a writer so good at teasing out the moral complexity of complicated situations in his books has such a simplistic view of a real world issue, where real lives are at steak [sic],” another person said. “Surprised and disappointed.”

george rr martin

But the truth is anyone who has ever read Martin’s “Game of Thrones” series should have seen this coming, as beloved character Jon Snow takes a stance in defense of taking in refugees from the embattled "wildlings" community.

Wildlings is the name given to a series of clans who call themselves “free folk” beyond the huge Wall that separates the land of Westeros from the far reaches of the North. Beyond the Wall, there are giants and all manner of mythical creatures including the White Walkers, a scary group of supernatural beings that can reanimate the dead.

The Night's Watch, which guards the Wall, has long been at war with the free folk who raid their lands, kill people, and kidnap women. It’s safe to say most of the Night's Watch hate the wildlings.

But the reason the wildlings are battling the Night's Watch in the first place is because they’re fleeing from the terrifying White Walkers who are marching towards the Wall.

white walker game of thrones

Protagonist Jon Snow recognizes after spending time with the free folk and that they’re not necessarily bad people, just a society trying to survive after being driven from their homes.

Martin's writing shows how pitiful they were (emphasis ours): "A thousand captives watched through the wooden bars of their stockage as the horn was lifted high. All were ragged and half-starved. Wildling’s, the Seven Kingdoms called them; they named themselves the free folk. They looked neither wild nor free — only hungry, frightened, numb."

Snow makes a deal with the free folk to let them pass under the Wall in order to save them from the White Walkers. The deal also gives Snow more men to defend the Seven Kingdoms from the White Walkers, and he agrees to settle the free folk in the realm, helping them assimilate.

Speaking with Bowen Marsh about the resettlement of the wildlings in "A Dance with Dragons," Snow makes the argument that they have a common cause:

“Once the free folk are settled in the Gift, they will become part of the realm,” Jon pointed out. “These are desperate days, and like to grow more desperate. We have seen the face of our real foe, a dead white face with bright blue eyes. The free folk have seen that face as well. Stannis is not wrong in this. We must make common cause with the wildlings.”

However, many of his Sworn Brothers on the Night's Watch take issue with Snow’s decision to save the refugees, saying they can’t be trusted and that he’s making a mistake.

Eventually Snow pays for his decision when his men gang up on him and stab him repeatedly.

Jon Snow Game of Thrones season five

But as Martin argues regarding Syrian refugees, it's clear he thinks Snow was in the right.

“Real lives are at stake,” he said in a LiveJournal comment. “The lives of hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees driven from their homes by war. Many of them women and children. That's the whole point. There's a moral imperative here.”

Snow also believes that the free folk will both assimilate to society and make it better, just like Martin argues any group of immigrants has done throughout history.

“History has demonstrated many times that immigrants revitalize a society, and create much more than they take,” Martin wrote about the Syrian refugees. “The sort of ‘they are just a bunch of lazy leeches’ sentiment [people] are expressing here was also directed at the Irish, the Italians, the Germans, the Polish, the Chinese, and many other immigrant groups in the past, all of whom over time have vastly enriched the culture of America. I have no doubt that the same will prove true of the Syrians.”

Jon Snow would undoubtedly agree. You can read the whole LiveJournal post here.

the mountain gregor cleganeHafþór Björnsson is best known for two things: His role on "Game of Thrones" as Gregor Clegane and breaking world records as an Icelandic Strongman

At 6 feet 9 inches tall, the 27-year-old Iceland native is an impressively large and strong competitor for his age. It's no wonder "Game of Thrones" producers brought him on to play the formidable Gregor Clegane — a man known as "The Mountain" due to his size.

And on November 28, a video was released of Björnsson breaking the world record for the highest keg toss.

The 33-pound keg was flung over 24 feet into the air as if it weighed nothing.

Watch the moment below:

In just two days, the video has been viewed over 1.2 million times, and hit the front page of Reddit's video subreddit. Though his role on "Game of Thrones" has been mysterious lately, fans can rest easy knowing Björnsson is here to stay in the strongman competitions.

Germany's intelligence agency says Saudi Arabia's 'game of thrones' risks tearing the Middle East apart

Germany's state intelligence agency says competition for influence inside the Saudi Arabian royal family is destabilising the wider Middle East, according to domestic media reports.

Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), one of Germany's premier daily newspapers, carries the warning from the BND intelligence agency.

According to FAZ, the BND identifies a shift toward an "impulsive intervention policy" in Yemen and elsewhere, driven by internal power struggles that pose a risk to the whole region.

Analysts at Royal Bank of Canada have previously referred to the internal discord as Saudi Arabia's version of HBO's "Game of Thrones," since the country's political life bears more resemblance to that of the fictional world of court intrigue than it does to that of most other countries.

Mohammad bin Salman, the country's deputy crown prince, is a major part of that dynastic battle. He is the 30-year old son of the current king, but the complex architecture of the country's stratified royal family means he is not next in line for the top job, even if he wants it. For starters, he's not the King's eldest son, even if he's the favourite.

The appointed successor falls to Crown Prince Muhammad bin Nayef, the king's nephew, who is decades older than Mohammad bin Salman.

Mohammad bin Salman has taken a central place in Saudi political life since his father, King Salman, ascended to the throne at the beginning of the year. He is also the country's defence minister, playing a large part in the violent intervention in Yemen's conflict this year.

The royal family has thousands of members with differing levels of wealth and power, and any sign that the deputy crown prince is attempting to leapfrog the crown prince could provoke resentment, especially if it seems to have the blessing of King Salman.

FAZ says BND analysts suggested a "latent risk" that the king's son tries to succeed his father directly, skipping out the crown prince. Saudi Arabia's growing proxy conflicts with Iran and a declining trust in the support of the US are also marked as destabilising factors.

Though it's not mentioned by the BND, Saudi Arabia's economic climate is also far less stable today than it was a few years ago — the tremendous collapse in oil prices means the country's fiscal position will be tenable for around five years, after which its "fiscal buffers"— largely foreign currency reserves — will be exhausted.

The first teaser trailer for 'Game of Thrones' season 6 is here and it's all about Jon Snow

jon snow game of thrones

HBO just surprised everyone with the very first teaser for the next season of "Game of Thrones."

The 40-second clip mostly focuses on Jon Snow, with different characters speaking over the flashing images of past characters being killed or wounded. While the footage being shown is from previous seasons, the voiceover sounds like new dialogue.

Our best guess based on the context (and flash of Bran at the very end) is that the two speakers are Bloodraven and Bran Stark. Bloodraven is the powerful man who appeared to Bran in dreams as a three-eyed crow. Bran traveled north and finally met up with him at the end of season four.

The new season of "Game of Thrones" will debut in April 2016.

Much speculation has surrounded Jon Snow's death in season five and whether he'll be revived. The clip takes us back to the scene of Snow's death, and then gives us a barrage of images, including White Walkers.

"They have no idea what's going to happen," one character says in a voiceover.

Well, someone knows what's going to happen, but not us.

HBO released the first teaser trailer for the next season of "Game of Thrones" Thursday afternoon. Though most of the footage in the 40-second video is from prior seasons, the composition is telling.

Not only does the trailer have brand-new dialogue, but some split-second images may contain clues about season six. If you haven't seen it yet, watch it now.

Let's break this thing down.

Warning: There are major spoilers ahead for every season of "Game of Thrones."

The trailer opens on this shot of Jon Snow. A voiceover, says "We watch, we listen, and we remember. The past is already written. The ink is dry."

The voice belongs to actor Max von Sydow, who was cast to play Bloodraven in season six. We already saw Bloodraven at the end of season four, but we know he'll be featured heavily in upcoming storylines.

As Bloodraven's voice fades, a barrage of images come in quick succession.

The new ‘Game of Thrones’ trailer teased a major storyline for season 6

Game of thrones season 4 three eyed raven

The “Game of Thrones” season six sneak peak was released by HBO Thursday, thrilling fans around the world.

Warning: There are major potential spoilers ahead!

Though there was an emphasis on footage from past seasons— from the stabbing of Jon Snow to the death of major characters like Joffrey Baratheon and Robb Stark — the voiceovers in the video appear to be brand new.

“We watch, we listen, and we remember,” the first voice says. “The past is already written, the ink is dry.”

“They have no idea what’s going to happen,” a second voice responds.

You can watch the full trailer below.

That first voice is that of actor Max von Sydow ("Minority Report"). He'll be taking over the character Bloodraven in season six. The second one is easy. That's Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright).

When we last saw him in season four of the HBO series, he was with Bloodraven.

The focus on Bran and the Bloodraven shouldn’t surprise too many fans since both were noticeably absent in season five. Wright previously confirmed he was returning in season six. "Game of Thrones" showrunner David Benioff explained Bran's absence in an analogy to Luke Skywalker from "Star Wars."

"It would be far less interesting, after 'The Empire Strikes Back' to have an hour-long movie in between 'Empire' and 'Return of the Jedi' where Luke is training," Benioff said. "It's so much cooler to cut from [the] end of 'Empire' to [the] beginning of 'Return,' where he's become the Jedi."

game of thrones bran

But instead of a Jedi, when we next see Bran, he’ll likely be a “greenseer,” just like Bloodraven. A greenseer is the title given to anyone who can see the future, past, and distant events through “Green Dreams” or by inhabiting weirwood trees.

Essentially, Bran will be able to inhabit the “minds” of trees much in the same way he can “warg” or inhabit the minds of animals and see what they see.

This ability for him to travel years, decades, or even centuries into the past is an exciting one. In the book “A Dance with Dragons,” Bran goes into the weirwood at Winterfell and sees not only his father Ned Stark when he was still alive, but a brief history of Winterfell.

weirwood tree game of thrones

Some fans have posited that Bran’s visions into the past could help explain some pressing “Game of Thrones” mysteries, including Jon Snow’s true parentage.

Bran will also likely see into the future, though whether or not he’ll be able to use these prophecies to his own or anyone else’s advantage remains to be seen.

The teaser ends with Bran hinting he'll indeed have some sort of premonition — "They have no idea what’s going to happen." Will he be able to clue anyone in to what he knows?

Apart from Bran, viewers may learn more about Bloodraven and his history, too. Through Martin’s Dunk and Egg novellas, fans learned Bloodraven was once known as Lord Brynden Rivers before he journeyed beyond the Wall and became a greenseer.

He has an interesting life story: Born the bastard albino son of a king, Lord Brynden fought in three rebellions, lost an eye, and was known as a sorcerer. He also became Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch before he was “lost” beyond the Wall and became a greenseer with the Children of the Forest.

bloodraven game of thrones

By the time Bran meets Bloodraven, he is an old, skeletal man on a throne of weirwood tree roots. Here’s the description of him in George R. R. Martin’s book “A Dance with Dragons”:

Seated on his throne of roots in the great cavern, half-corpse and half-tree, Lord Brynden seemed less a man than some ghastly statue made of twisted wood, old bone, and rotted wool. The only thing that looked alive in the pale ruin that was his face was his one red eye, burning like the last coal in a dead fire, surrounded by twisted roots and tatters of leathery white skin hanging off a yellowed skull.

The sight of him still frightened Bran—the weirwood roots snaking in and out of his withered flesh, the mushrooms sprouting from his cheeks, the white wooden worm that grew from the socket where one eye had been.

Cheery, right?

No matter what, the HBO teaser promises an emphasis not only on Jon Snow, but on a Bran and Bloodraven storyline, which will likely shed more light on the "Game of Thrones" world.

Over 145,000 fans decided a 'Game of Thrones' character is the worst person on television

Ramsay Bolton Snow Game of Thrones Season five

Starting in November, The Atlantic sought to answer one question: Who is the actual worst character on television?

With the help of readers, the editor team created a 32-person list and bracketed the group.

Each week an article was posted with the arguments of evilness found for two characters going head-to-head.

Then readers would vote, and the worst of the set advanced to the next round.

The final verdict?

Ramsay Bolton is by far the worst.

According to their post, over 145,000 Atlantic readers participated in the vote. Ramsay, the sadistic son of Roose Bolton on "Game of Thrones," beat out several top dogs in the world of television villains.

Walter White of "Breaking Bad," Jim Moriarty from "Sherlock," and Hannibal Lecter were some of the top contenders.

The result isn't surprising. Ramsay Bolton is fond of skinning people alive, raping young women, and killing battlefield opponents even after they surrender. Ramsay also enjoys pretending to set prisoners free, only to "hunt" them with his vicious dogs, allowing the animals to eat his victims alive.

Charming.

You can see the whole bracket over at the Atlantic, and check out the write-ups for each character posted throughout the month.

We finally have a brief look at what's to come in "Game of Thrones" season six.

Late Sunday, HBO released a video recap of what the cable network aired in 2015 with a sneak-peek of next year's shows.

"Game of Thrones" was featured several times with a few old shots and a short 3-second clip of new footage among the montage of shows and movies. While there is no audio to go with the new shots of characters, one old scene added in may be significant.

First, check out the clip. The new "Game of Thrones" footage starts around 2:15.

Now, let's break down what you just saw.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for "Game of Thrones."

Early on, we see Jon Snow. Over the clip, we hear Melisandre's voice say, "There's power in you, do you feel it?"

Jon Snow Game of ThronesFor someone who is allegedly "dead," HBO seems to be focusing a lot on Jon Snow in all its season six promos. This set up of Jon and Melisandre in particular hints at a popular fan theory about his survival and/or resurrection. HBO likely included this segment for a reason.

But now, onto the brand new items.

First, we get a look at Daenerys Targaryen. She's a little worse for the wear with unkempt hair and dirt on her face, but her iconic silver dragon necklace is still there and she seems unhurt. Remember, last time we saw Daenerys she was approached by a large group of Dothraki men.

Daenerys Targaryen Game of ThronesNext, is a shot of Ramsay Bolton on horseback. It looks like he's leading the Bolton troops somewhere. Good luck to whoever he's going after in season six.

Finally, there's Cersei Lannister. She's sporting a new short haircut, thanks to the High Sparrow, and hugging her son Tommen. They'll definitely be reunited in season six, but can the Lannisters maintain their power in King's Landing?

Mark Foster Gage Architects 41 West 57th Street View from 57th street a

Mark Foster Gage is tired of boring and boxy skyscrapers. He wants gargoyles.

Gage, principal and founder of Mark Foster Gage Architects, recently released his plans for a mammoth 102-story building at 41 W. 57th St., right below New York's Central Park.

Inspired by the hit HBO show "Game of Thrones," Gage and his colleagues have taken to calling the regal building "The Khaleesi," a nod to character Daenerys Targaryen's role as queen and mother of dragons.

It certainly does look fit for a Khaleesi.

Gage, an assistant dean at the Yale School of Architecture, recently led a two-year research project on stone-carving.

The same techniques that students used to sculpt Minions (seen here) could someday help create the limestone facade that drapes over the Khaleesi skyscraper.

The imagined result — a 1,492-foot tower that fits 91 residential units along with shops and a 4-star restaurant — is just stunning.

Photos that just emerged online may further support fan theories that Kit Harington will reprise the role of Jon Snow on the upcoming sixth season of HBO's "Game of Thrones," even though Snow died last season.

The photos allegedly show that Harington attended the show's wrap party. The man in the photos does appear to be the English actor who plays Jon Snow, though it's hard to be certain as the photos are quite blurry.

See them below:

When we last saw Jon Snow on season five, he had been attacked by members of the Night's Watch — each taking a turn at stabbing the newly elected Lord Commander. He was left to bleed out in the snow.

After Jon Snow's death, fans instantly began to rally around the character.

While HBO top brass, co-stars, and Harington himself have said Jon Snow is either dead or not returning, fans have continued a constant vigil for the beloved character's return.

Harington sightings have propelled fans to believe that the character will be back. Others feel the show hasn't completed his story.

jon snowHBO has even cleverly played off the speculation with a season-six poster featuring Jon Snow and suggesting he may remain important. But pictures like the above are still quite in demand.

And Harington recently said he hasn't come to accept it.

"Do I think people taking photos of you without your permission is rude? Of course I do. I deal with it a lot," Haringtonhe told Vulture while promoting his newest movie, "MI-5.""There's a lot of camera phones being pointed at me in not such a subtle manner."

'The Leftovers' creator Damon Lindelof tells us his 10 favorite TV shows of 2015

Damon Lindelof Tim Mosenfelder Getty

With 2015 coming to a close, it’s fun as always to come up with a list of favorite things from the year. But it’s even more fun when the list comes from someone who's an authority on a subject.

Damon Lindelof — who is known best for being one of the creators on “Lost” and now heads arguably the comeback series of the year, HBO’s “The Leftovers” (which you can catch now on HBO NOW or HBO GO) — lives, breathes, and eats television. So we asked him tell us his 10 favorite shows of 2015, hoping for insightful commentary. And we got it.

Here are Lindolof’s top 10 shows of the year.

SEE ALSO: "The Leftovers" season-finale director reveals the biggest challenges of the episode

“Master of None” (Netflix)

The latest hit for the streaming giant stars Aziz Ansari (who also co-created the show) as a 30-year-old struggling actor in New York as he toils through his personal and professional life.

“I just respond to the purity of his voice, and the show surprises me constantly,” Lindelof told Business Insider. “I feel it's easy to be cynical now and that's what I thought I was singing up for when I started watching that show, but it's kind of one of the truest romantic comedies that I've seen. And most importantly, I feel like it is saying things about the Indian community that no television show is. For example, the fourth episode is ‘Indians on TV’ and they just start with this amazing montage and mention of [white actor] Fisher Stevens [playing an Indian character in the ‘Short Circuit’ movies]. This season on ‘The Leftovers’ in the second episode, these MIT guys come and they want to buy Nora's house, and when I spoke to our casting director, I was like, 'We should have an Indian actor play that lead MIT guy.' And I didn't think that I was being racist. Now I do. And that's flattering, who would not want to be an MIT engineer? But when a television show can make you feel guilty and free at the same time, and inform you and then make you laugh a second later, no show is doing that like ‘Master of None’ is.”

“The Knick” (Cinemax)

Creator Steven Soderbergh takes us back to early 1900s medicine as we follow doctor James Thackery (Clive Owen) and his fellow surgeons. They try radical procedures to save lives while dealing with serious personal problems like addiction, racism, and marital issues.

“Let's just put the writing and the acting, the things that make it brilliant, aside for a second, and just talk very specifically about how this show is produced. If you make television and you watch this show just from the costumes to the period to the music, it's such a beautiful show. It feels so pure. As pure as the medicinal cocaine that Thackery injects. Even though I binge it, it does feel like you can watch an episode of ‘The Knick’ and it feels really complete. And they will end episodes in these incredibly artful, beautiful ways. There are other shows that are heavily serialized that I also like and love, but I feel ‘The Knick' really embraces that idea.”

“Transparent” (Amazon)

The award-winning drama follows the lives of a Los Angeles family after discovering that their father (Jeffrey Tambor) is transgender.

“There are shows on this list that I watch alone and there are shows that I watch with my wife. I think one of the great things about marriage is finding television shows that you can watch and appreciate together. We had been hearing good things about 'Transparent.' I was like, ‘Let's check this show out.’ And we're bad at technology so we couldn't figure out how to get Amazon Prime on our television, and she's like, ‘We're not watching a show on your laptop.’ And I'm like, ‘Let's just watch one episode.’ And 18 hours later, we had watched the first season of ‘Transparent.’ That includes dropping our son off at camp and we went to a Starbucks and huddled in a corner with one ear bud in each ear crying watching ‘Transparent.’ At it's got the best opening title sequence on television, in my opinion.”

Fans were so outspoken about this disturbing 'Game of Thrones' scene that parts of the upcoming season were actually changed

Fans do have some sway when it comes to the storytelling on HBO hit "Game of Thrones."

Last May, viewers – including a US senator and bloggers – spoke out against a scene in which Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) was raped by Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon). Many believed it was "gratuitous" and wasn't necessary to the show's plot.

Apparently, the show's bosses heard the criticism, Forbes reports.

"[The show’s creators Dan Weiss and David Benioff] were responsive to the discussion and there were a couple of things that changed as a result,” director Jeremy Podeswa, who helmed two episodes last season and two episodes of the upcoming sixth season, said at a breakfast held by Screen Producers Australia CEO Matthew Deaner in Sydney on Friday.

“It is important that [the producers] not self-censor," the director continued. "The show depicts a brutal world where horrible things happen. They did not want to be too overly influenced by that [criticism], but they did absorb and take it in and it did influence them in a way.”

Forbes didn't clarify whether Podeswa outlined what those changes are or how the creators were influenced, but it certainly makes sense that the producers would consider the controversy as they continue to plot the series.

"Game of Thrones" returns in April 2016.

Clever tricks for creating your own language from the guy who invented the complex Dothraki language in 'Game of Thrones'

game of thrones dragon daenerysAs a college freshman, David J. Peterson became fascinated with languages. He then began inventing his own words and grammar.

“It was kind of like crocheting,” he says. “Except you can make money with crocheting.”

Peterson finally hit payday in 2009, when he won a competition to design the Dothraki language for Game of Thrones. Soon, he was crafting fictional tongues for TV shows like Defiance and The 100.

How do you start inventing a language?

I separate the process into three distinct branches: sounds, word meanings, and grammar. I usually start with the sound system, which affects grammar, and also with nouns. Then I base the language on whatever desire I have for the grammar’s shape to take.

In the real world, languages evolve over time. Do yours?

I am creating the language to look as if it evolved in the real world, so it has to have a realistic character to it. But since I am emulating thousands of years of linguistic evolution on paper, it is a monumentally difficult task.

Is there anything you try to consciously avoid?

I don’t like articles and verbs. Languages like Russian, which have no definite or indefinite articles, get on fine without them—and that’s wonderful.

Once again, "Game of Thrones" is the No. 1 pirated show of the year.

This is the fourth consecutive year that the HBO fantasy drama has topped this list, with a huge 14.4 million downloads on BitTorrent, according to TorrentFreak.

To give you a sense of the show's popularity on piracy websites, there's a difference of eight million downloads between "GoT" and the No. 2 most-downloaded series on the list, "The Walking Dead."

"Game of Thrones" also beat TV's most-watched show, CBS's "The Big Bang Theory," which is in the third-place slot.

Despite the creation of HBONow for non-cable subscribers in the past year, the prominence of "GoT" here is not a big surprise. Earlier this year, it broke an all-time record for illegal downloads when more than 258,131 users shared the same "GoT" torrent file simultaneously.

And according to TorrentFreak, illegal downloads aren't declining at all. They're in fact increasing, many to levels way above the traditional TV audience numbers for programs.

Which other shows have become favorites for illegal downloading? Here's the list of 2015's most-pirated TV shows.
