In preparation of season six, HBO has released an intriguing look into how the visual effects and stunt teams bring Daenerys' dragons and their terrifying fire-breathing abilities to life.
It involves a lot of flamethrowers.
While you may see Drogon unleashing a fiery blast in season five, he's not there during filming. The crew needs to get creative on set.

The fire you see whenever one of Daenerys' dragons breathes flame is real. It just comes from flamethrowers capable of shooting flames up to 50 feet.

The flamethrowers are attached to cranes, which shoot fire from a variety of angles. Here, for example, the flame comes from above, where a dragon is perched above its victim.
