Warning: Spoilers ahead for "Game of Thrones" season seven, including speculation of future events.

Readers of George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" series have long theorized that the books are meant to be an in-universe history written by a character. Now, thanks to a small scene on the second episode of "Game of Thrones" season seven, more weight is being thrown behind this theory.

People believe "A Song of Ice and Fire" is a history "written" by Sam Tarly — similar to the way Bilbo Baggins is the "author" of "The Hobbit" within Tolkein's universe.

The maesters of the Citadel are tasked with writing the histories of the world, whether it's reports on current events or researching other texts. On this week's episode, Archmaester Ebrose tells Sam that writing with style and accuracy is the key to making sure your work is read later.

"I'm not writing 'A Chronicle of the Wars Following the Death of King Robert I,' so it can sit on the shelf unread," Ebrose told Sam.

When Sam made an unimpressed face, Ebrose asked what he'd name the book instead.

"Possibly something a bit more poetic?" Sam replied.

Redditors on the /r/asoiaf subreddit picked up on this moment, believing this was a hint at the idea that Sam Tarly is really the one "narrating" George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" series. "A Song of Ice and Fire" is certainly a more poetic name, so perhaps there's credence to this prediction.

As Redditor Fat_Walda pointed out, Martin has said before that he is most similar to Sam of all the characters in Westeros. So if anyone within the universe would be the "author" of the series, it makes sense for it to be Sam. Perhaps the final chapter of Martin's series will show Sam sitting down to write the soon-to-be legendary experiences of Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen, and the other heroes of Westeros.
